How to choose a perfume?

Each of us has fragrances stored in our memory that evoke pleasant associations, bring back happy memories and simply suit us perfectly. Usually, the choice of perfume depends on personality. Confident, outgoing and charismatic people prefer strong, more intense fragrances, while sensitive and delicate people like to surround themselves with subtle notes. The choice of fragrance is often tailored to the occasion—for work or a social gathering, we will choose a completely different eau de toilette than for a date or an evening banquet. Fragrance categories

Perfume manufacturers distinguish several basic categories according to which they classify the fragrances in their products. If you do not yet have a favorite fragrance, it is worth considering at the outset which group it will belong to. Here they are:

  • floral—delicate, sweet and subtle fragrances, bringing to mind associations with a spring meadow
  • oriental—more intense, strongly noticeable, musky or spicy fragrances, ideal for evening outings
  • woody—moderately intense, characterized by the scent of cider, sandalwood or pine
  • green—refreshing, light fragrances, often featuring lemongrass or green tea
  • chypre—relatively uncommon, earthy, forest fragrances in which you can detect, among other things, the aroma of moss or citrus.

Fragrance notes

The choice is somewhat more difficult here, because discovering the right perfume fragrance requires quite a lot of time. Every fragrant bottle changes its scent. We distinguish three basic notes that appear one after another:

  • top note—the fragrance we sense immediately after applying the perfume. It lasts only a few minutes, so it should not guide us when shopping
  • heart note—the main note of the perfume, which lasts much longer; we can detect it only several minutes after application
  • base note—the final phase, which we can sense no earlier than 25–30 minutes later. It interweaves with the heart note, thereby revealing the full character of the perfume
