At the beginning of November, we wrote that the City Council had adopted a resolution concerning the local spatial development plan for Popiełuszko Square. On the site, which is the most attractive in terms of investment, investors are to build a shopping mall and a water park. We also reported that the issue of developing the square had sparked heated discussion among councillors.

“Is this the right way to develop the site? Is this the right moment?” asked Cezariusz Rudyk of PO during the October session of the City Council. The councillor recalled the opposition from residents that the plan to build a large-format store in the centre of Bolesławiec had provoked during Józef Burniak’s presidency. He added that the current mayor, Piotr Roman, had opposed the concept at the time. “Can the combination of a swimming pool and large-format stores be substantively justified? We cannot find such a justification,” Rudyk said. – “We talked to both urban planners and architects. It is a very difficult and extremely challenging combination.”

The IstotneInformacje.pl website asked its readers what should be located on Popiełuszko Square. The poll received 2,584 votes. More than 40% of voters decided that a swimming pool should definitely be built on the site. As many as 28% believe that a proper park would be better. Only 18% of poll participants supported the construction of a shopping mall.

We also asked councillors what should be built on the most attractive site in Bolesławiec in terms of investment. “A swimming pool and a large-format store. That is the concept,” Paweł Dul of Ziemia Bolesławiecka told us. “What is consistent with the spatial development plan will be built. The City Council will decide,” said Deputy Chairperson Józef Pokładek.

Ewa Ołenicz-Bernacka of PO has a different opinion. “I believe that a swimming pool should not be built on Popiełuszko Square, but rather a public-use facility. It would be better if a proper shopping mall were built there,” the councillor said. “Not only with attractive shops, but also with cafés. A place that would become a meeting centre,” she added.

It is still unknown exactly what will be built on Popiełuszko Square and when.
