The project is dedicated to primary school students in Poland who have outstanding talents in history and the humanities and have participated in various forms of extracurricular activities, competitions and interest clubs. Ten students from Kruszyn Primary School were invited to take part in the science camp.
Specialist workshops and meetings with witnesses to history were held at the headquarters of the “Solidarni Razem” Association and NSZZ “Solidarność” of Western Pomerania in Szczecin. On the first day of their stay, the students met witnesses to historical events and leading figures of the anti-communist opposition, including Mr Mieczysław Jurek, Mr Władysław Diakun, Mr Zbigniew Zalewski, Mr Artur Gałęski, and IPN expert Mr Michał Siedziaka, who gave a lecture on the political situation in Poland during the period of the Polish People’s Republic. The witnesses to history, in turn, introduced the participants to the world of Solidarność in the 1980s and 1990s.
In the afternoon, the participants set out to explore Szczecin and visit the Museum of Technology, where they could admire automotive memorabilia in a modern multimedia museum.
On the second day, classes were conducted by Sebastian Zielonka, followed by a meeting with Mrs Zofia Komołowska, the wife of the late Longin Komołowski, who presented family mementoes and archival materials from the 1980s and discussed her husband, an outstanding anti-communist opposition activist in the region, deputy prime minister and minister in Jerzy Buzek’s government, and a man socially committed to the Polish diaspora and people with disabilities.
The science camp was an opportunity for the students to deepen and expand their knowledge of contemporary history and meet their peers participating in the project from other regions of Poland, including Nowogard.
