The school began operating on September 23, 1946, as the Public Common School in Tylinów, where 124 children began their education under the direction of Wilhelmina Borysiewicz. Over the years, the school’s name changed, eventually becoming Primary School No. 3 in Bolesławiec. The second important date is May 16, 1997. On that day, a ceremony was held to give the school the distinguished name of the Home Army.
The celebrations of both anniversaries began with the “We Remember” academic conference, held on May 15 at the “Orzeł” Cultural Integration Centre. During the meeting, Zdzisław Abramowicz spoke about the fate of Home Army officers in Bolesławiec. Piotr Kucznir presented the subject of national symbols in public spaces. Those gathered also watched the film “Home Army” by Elżbieta Szczegodzińska, a teacher at Primary School No. 3. The conference was hosted by “Number Three” student Karolina Guzowska.
At the Monument to Fighting Poland, the school community, local government authorities and invited guests, together with the schools’ colour guards and a military honour guard from the 23rd Silesian Artillery Regiment, paid tribute to the commanders and soldiers of the Home Army. “This steel anchor is a symbol of fighting and independent Poland. It is a symbol of Home Army soldiers, who professed values that were simple and clear to Poles: God, honour and homeland—values that characterised those times, that era and the Polish soldier. And we, as the student community of Primary School No. 3, named after the Home Army, strive to serve our homeland faithfully. We know that we have a huge debt to repay. And we know that our task is Remembrance. That is why we wish to thank the veterans and Home Army soldiers, because thanks to you this legend survived—a legend that calls us and obliges us. Thank you for a free Poland,” said Dorota Basiak, headmistress of Primary School No. 3, in her speech.
The following day of the celebrations was highlighted by an anniversary gala preceded by Holy Mass at the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary. The ceremony included, among other things, tributes to veterans and members of the World Association of Home Army Soldiers. The following people received thanks and gifts made by students:
- Ryszard Filipowicz – president of the Lower Silesian District Board of the World Association of Home Army Soldiers, together with members of the association
- Zdzisław Abramowicz – president of the Bolesławiec Branch of the World Association of Home Army Soldiers, together with members of the association
- Zofia Bokszańska – secretary of the Board of the Association of Combatants of the Republic of Poland and Former Political Prisoners’ Branch, together with members of the association
- Maria Niemczuk – chairwoman of the Bolesławiec Branch of the Association of Siberians, together with members of the association.
On the occasion of the school’s anniversary, thanks were also given to people who support the school’s day-to-day operation and activities and help it develop, including Mayor Piotr Roman, his deputy Kornel Filipowicz, as well as City Council members.
The anniversary was also an excellent opportunity to thank parents, friendly institutions, associations and friends of the school. Special thanks went to all the school’s employees and to the headteachers who led the school over the years: Lucyna Szczegodzińska, Eugeniusz Kowalski, Barbara Dąbrowska-Bugaj. The thanks for the parents of Primary School No. 3 students were accepted by the Chairwoman of the Parents’ Council, Patrycja Majewska.
Piotr Roman emphasised the particular importance of patriotic education at Primary School No. 3, teaching patriotism and love of one’s homeland, and shaping civic attitudes suited to our times, while congratulating the teaching staff and the entire school community on their achievements to date.
The ceremony was enhanced by student performances that presented the school’s history in a particularly engaging way.
