On 28 October, during the 20th International Poleko Environmental Fair in Poznań, awards were presented in the Pantheon of Polish Ecology competition. The competition is addressed to businesses, local government units, environmental organisations and institutions supporting pro-environmental initiatives. It is organised by a consulting company. Entry to the competition costs PLN 500.
Bolesławiec won in the local government unit category. The award was granted for the second stage of construction of the Municipal Waste Neutralisation Plant in Trzebień. The project began in 2002 and was completed in December 2003. A municipal waste-sorting station with a processing line, a new landfill cell and a containerised biomass composting facility were built. The plant receives inert waste (including concrete waste and brick rubble), bulky waste and hazardous waste (including paints, batteries, medicines and accumulators). It is estimated that, thanks to the introduction of selective collection and the launch of the municipal waste-sorting line, the landfill can be used for approximately 50 years.
