A ceremony marking the 20th anniversary of the Association of People with Disabilities in Bolesławiec took place on Thursday, April 20, in the Forum hall of BOK – MCC. There was no shortage of distinguished guests, including Lower Silesian Marshal Cezary Przybylski, as well as summaries. During the multimedia presentation, the following words were heard:
The first board and president Zbigniew Kurasz decided to show that people with disabilities are also active, educated and athletic. The table tennis section is an excellent example that people are not judged by their appearance, but by their actions. [...]
Over all these years, the people, boards and presidents changed. One thing never changed: everyone tried to ensure that as many people with disabilities as possible left their homes and spent time with peers facing similar problems.
The results of these efforts did not take long to appear. From a small group of several SON founders, it grew into a large organization. In 2006, it already had 150 members; in 2009, 100 more; and in 2012, 450. By the end of last year, SON already had more than 600 members.
What did the association offer its members that there are so many of them? The answer: “Kindness, respect, help in difficult life situations, including financial assistance, as well as understanding of human weaknesses.”
During the gala, President of Bolesławiec Piotr Roman and Mayor of Gmina Bolesławiec Andrzej Dutkowski became honorary members of the organization. The association's first head, Zbigniew Kurasz, was also honored with a medal.
The gala was hosted by SON head Maria Szpak. The ceremony was enhanced by performances from dancers of the BOK – MCC Contemporary Dance Studio, students of Halina Bałacka-Kłak, and students of the II Community Self-Help Home in Bolesławiec.
