Where can you find mobile phone insurance at an affordable price? Contrary to appearances, it is not difficult.
Mobile network operators’ offers
In Poland, the most popular policies are smartphone protection plans sold by mobile network operators. Their offers usually include insurance whose cost is added to the monthly subscription fee. The policy normally costs from a few to a dozen or so zlotys per month, which may seem like a small amount. However, when the total insurance cost is calculated, it turns out that over the course of 1–2 years, customers pay quite a lot—often the total of all premiums exceeds 10% of the phone’s original value. Worse still, the sum insured, meaning the maximum compensation the customer can receive, is low. For many phone models, it is PLN 600, which means that if you buy a smartphone for PLN 1,500 and spill water on it after a week, you lose around PLN 900, which is not covered by the sum insured.
Insurance when purchasing the device
Electronics stores allow customers to purchase smartphone insurance when buying a device. Some stores also allow such a policy to be purchased within the following 12 months from the date of purchase, but only after the smartphone’s condition has been checked at an authorised service centre. The cost of smartphone insurance offered by electronics stores is usually around 10% of the device’s original value. Occasionally, a similar policy may be provided free of charge as part of a promotion, but it is worth examining the scope of its protection carefully, as it may be very narrow.
A policy purchased by the smartphone owner
Every smartphone owner can purchase a policy for their phone independently. For example, they can choose the British Mobile Phone Insurance, which guarantees full protection against liquid damage, mechanical damage and the wear of components such as the battery. This policy is cheaper and more advantageous than the widely known smartphone insurance offered in Poland by mobile networks and electronics stores. To purchase it, simply complete an online form and pay the premium by bank transfer. It is a quick and, most importantly, cost-effective solution for smartphone owners.
