We took up the matter at the request of one father who wanted to enroll his young daughter at the only nursery in Bolesławiec. It turned out that—for now—there are no places available. The parents of more than 40 children are in a similar situation. Should the city authorities, which surely have demographic data, not create new places for the youngest children?

According to Irena Łuczak, director of Municipal Public Kindergarten No. 5—the only facility in the city with nursery groups—it is too early to make such a decision. It will only be possible to say next year whether it is necessary to create a new group. “A nursery is a specific kind of facility,” says the director. “There is an incredible turnover here,” adds Irena Łuczak.

This is the first year that so many people have applied. From personal experience, Irena Łuczak knows that some will give up their places at the nursery. People who genuinely have no one to entrust their child to do not always apply here either. There have been cases in which parents whose second child was born sent their older child to the nursery because they wanted to focus on raising the younger one. The director realizes that there are people on the waiting list who genuinely need a place—both parents work—and, as she admits, she remembers them.

Until September 30, people can inquire about available places. They can also submit an appeal, although so far only three couples have taken advantage of this option. Although there are only 33 places, nearly 90 of the youngest children passed through the nursery last year. The fee for each month a child spends at the nursery is PLN 120, excluding meals.
