The competition involves collecting as many aluminium cans as possible. It does not matter what beverage they contained, as the main idea behind “Golden Can” is to promote environmental protection and waste segregation. Around 1,500 participants took part in this year’s competition. All the participating institutions collected more than 25,000 cans. The organisers of the fourth edition of the competition are the Centre for Environmental Education operating at the Youth Cultural Centre and the Municipal Communal Services Company. Ewa Lijewska, director of the Youth Cultural Centre, thanked MZGK President Władysław Bakalarz and Director Jarosław Kowalski, thanks to whom the Youth Cultural Centre joined the event’s organisers in 2006. The prizes were presented by Bolesławiec Mayor Piotr Roman, City Council Chairwoman Janina Piestrak-Babijczuk and Deputy Bolesławiec County Head Stanisław Chwojnicki.
Before the prizes were presented, everyone gathered watched a short cartoon, “Felka’s Advice on How to Sort Waste.” The cartoon, which tells the story of Felek and his brother Peta, promoted the idea of waste segregation and, as could be seen, was particularly popular with the youngest participants in the competition. The participation of preschool children was a great success of this year’s “Golden Can.” The youngest children and their parents collected around 9,000 cans.
Karolinka Mierzawa from Municipal Public Preschool No. 2 in Bolesławiec proved to be an outstanding collector. She collected as many as 1,393 cans.
Nikola Lechowska and Michał Kwieciński from Municipal Public Preschool No. 2 were also recognised. The institution also received the award for the best preschool institution, with its pupils collecting nearly 6,500 cans in total. The prizes from Municipal Public Preschool No. 1 in Bolesławiec went to Norbert Nakonieczny, Magda Sawin and Michał Wierzejewski. The children from the preschool department in Gościszów also did excellently: Damian Stupiec, Hubert Rudzik and Mikołaj Omiatacz.
The best primary school institution was the Primary School in Gościszów; the recognised pupils were Jan Łaniocha, Malwina Sikora and Sławomir Rudzik. The students collected 706 cans. Meanwhile, the best institution among upper-secondary schools was the Complex of General and Vocational Schools in Bolesławiec, with 3,180 cans. Ewelina Najdek, Angelika Matyjewicz and Judyta Mandziuk, along with their supervisor Ewa Dmuchowska, collected the prizes and diplomas.
The title of best institution went to the John Paul II Lower Secondary School in Iwiny. Its students collected more than 11,000 cans. Their efforts were rewarded—they won a large television set.
Łukasz Pławiak from Municipal Public Preschool No. 2 received the “Super Collector” title. Łukasz collected more than 1,700 cans. The competition organisers gave him a new bicycle.
Ewa Lijewska read out a letter of congratulations from Krzysztof Strynkowski, Deputy President of the Management Board of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management in Wrocław. The mayor thanked the organisers. He also said he was pleased that the competition now covered both the city and the county, and that the Youth Cultural Centre was becoming a “strong environmental centre.”
