The revived BKS senior team began its campaign in the Jelenia Góra A class with a high-scoring victory over LKS Kraśnik Dolny. The team of Tomasz Fulczyński defeated its opponents 8–0. Before BKS’s first home match on Saturday, the coach gave us a brief interview.
Marcin Zabawa: After BKS’s senior team withdrew from the fourth division, for six months fans lived with uncertainty about what would happen next to the team and the club. Suddenly, a coach appears—a former BKS player. How did it happen that you returned to Spółdzielcza after so many years?
Tomasz Fulczyński: I spoke with Tomasz Jasiński (coach of the children’s and youth groups at BKS – editor’s note). We are brothers-in-law, and he started the conversation on this subject. Until then, I had been a coach in Łąka.
And you came to BKS.
I thought it all through. I thought about how many years I had spent at this club and played at fourth-division level, and suddenly there was nothing... I also learned that Mariusz Rutkowski (a coach known in football circles as Kempes – editor’s note) had found several people willing to play, so the possibility of building a team arose.
So an idea emerged and the decision was made to build a new BKS senior team. You returned to the club—what happened next?
I knew that Józek Pietrzak and Łukasz Graczyk would join us from Łąka, and that other players from other clubs would join too. However, I did not think that I would still be able to play on this pitch myself (laughs). There was a first meeting, and quite a few people came. They heard then that they could play for the proverbial sausage and a beer. Undoubtedly, each of these players could have counted on a few złoty at their club. Respect to them for wanting to do something for the city and for each of them contributing something of himself. Some of them could play in a higher division, but they took on playing here... respect.
Pre-season preparations and friendlies. How do you assess it all?
A defeat against Apis... Well, the team was definitely better, but first, we were missing three players from the starting lineup; second, we did not take our chances; and the referee also allowed goals scored from offside positions. With a little luck, we could have been leading 2–1 at half-time.
And was the season opener successful?
Looking at the result, yes, but it could have been twice as good.
What are your goals for this season?
For me, there is one—promotion. I do not hide the fact that any other result will be a failure.
Who will be BKS’s toughest opponent?
Looking at previous seasons, I think Nowogrodziec poses a threat to us. We should be able to deal with the other teams comfortably.
And if there is promotion, will you still be BKS’s coach?
We will see (smiles).
Thank you for the interview.
Thank you.
