The tragic incident occurred during the night of July 31 to August 1, 2015, in Lubań. The suspect had lived with his common-law partner and their 13-year-old son for several years. The woman and the man sometimes had arguments, initiated by Mariusz K.
On that fateful night, the defendant, who was intoxicated and under the influence of narcotic substances, insulted the victim, behaved aggressively and threatened to kill her. Fearing her common-law partner, the woman fled to the basement rooms. The man then promised her that he would calm down. She therefore returned to the apartment.
The perpetrator did not keep his word. He grabbed a folding knife and stabbed the woman in the neck in front of their 13-year-old child. Seeing this, the boy knocked the knife from the defendant’s hand, and the victim managed to escape to her son’s room. However, the perpetrator ran after her. There, he knocked her down and began inflicting further blows to various parts of her body, shouting that he would “kill her”.
Meanwhile, the boy notified the police by telephone. The officers who arrived at the scene restrained the perpetrator as he was delivering further knife blows to his victim. They also called an ambulance. Thanks to the immediate assistance provided to the victim, she was saved.
Mariusz K. pleaded not guilty to the crime with which he was charged.
Nevertheless, based on the evidence collected, the District Court in Jelenia Góra found him guilty of the offense and sentenced him to 15 years in prison. It also ruled that the above-mentioned man would be eligible for conditional release only after serving 13 years of his sentence.
The man had already been convicted by the courts multiple times, including for crimes against life and health.
