The Mayor of Bolesławiec, Piotr Roman, said: “We ask that this matter be treated as seriously as possible. We would like to unveil the plaque on April 10.”

He added: “Various groups should become involved in this initiative: private individuals, institutions and political parties. It should be a symbol of a kind of consensus in the city. For all of us, the Smolensk disaster was a major life experience.”

The mayor also informed the councillors that in the near future he intends to invite the leaders of political groups and representatives of associations and appeal for a collection to fund this project.

Eugeniusz Jabłoński, a councillor from the Forum group Eugeniusz Jabłoński (pictured in the header image: in the middle), also spoke: “This is a civic initiative, the initiative of a social committee comprising several dozen people.”

As E. Jabłoński explained, producing a plaque measuring 180 x 260 cm is to cost PLN 30,000, plus installation. “The point is for it to be legible,” the councillor added. It is to bear the 96 names of the victims of the Smolensk disaster in alphabetical order. The plaque itself will probably be made of red granite and installed by the defensive walls on Kubika Street in Bolesławiec.

We will return to this subject.
