The basis for planning the new solutions is a developed concept for changes, together with an analysis of sources of danger. Between 2012 and 2015, 20 accidents involving pedestrians occurred in this area. They mainly involved incidents at pedestrian crossings. The greatest number of such accidents occurred at the intersection of Wrocławska and Gwiezdna streets (7) and near the third gate of the Municipal Cemetery (5).

“These are yet another of my consultations with experienced users of the city’s roads concerning the best solutions for ensuring safety,” said Tadeusz Krzakowski. “I want to know your professional opinion before we make decisions about changes to traffic organization. In this particular case, I believe that the cause of the tragedies involving pedestrians is drivers’ reprehensible violation of speed-limit regulations,” the mayor emphasized. “However, when introducing changes, we must take into account the speed and smooth flow of vehicle traffic, intersection capacity, and MPK bus traffic.

The prepared project includes proposals such as improved lighting at pedestrian crossings, installing D-6 signs with reflective borders, new pedestrian refuges, colored road markings for the crossing stripes, and pictograms on the road. Meeting participants proposed, among other things, installing traffic lights at the cemetery’s third gate, removing shrubs that obstruct visibility, and equipping intersections with devices enabling pedestrians to activate a green light.

The meeting also covered the construction of a bus bay between the cemetery gates, the planned reconstruction of the intersection of Wrocławska and Spokojna streets, and changes to traffic organization at other intersections.

Mayor Krzakowski thanked the participants for a very constructive meeting and appealed to taxi-driver organizations to act as ambassadors for Legnica when providing services to visitors to our city.
