At Niepodległości Roundabout, the road foundation was reinforced and curbs were installed during its reconstruction. New paving-block surfaces were laid on the sidewalks. As part of the integrated traffic and public transport management system, the traffic lights were expanded.
There were some surprises along the way. “It turned out that the road subgrade was clayey and too weak for the purposes we had planned,” says Andrzej Szymkowiak, director of the Municipal Roads Authority. “It had to be reinforced. But to do that, a new technology had to be developed, which took three weeks. That is why the work took somewhat longer,” he adds.
Once the work at the roundabout is completed, Sikorskiego Street will be closed to traffic (on the section from the roundabout to the intersection with Iwaszkiewicza Street). Traffic arrangements will change. The proposed plan is currently under review. Once it is approved, the city authorities will announce the date of its implementation.
A modern and very important solution for Piekary’s transport system will be the construction of a turbo roundabout at the intersection of Sikorskiego Street and Iwaszkiewicza Street. An additional lane will be built here for vehicles turning right from Sikorskiego Street into Iwaszkiewicza Street. The road, sidewalk and bicycle-path structures will be replaced.
As part of this project, a new bus stop will be built just beyond the intersection of Sikorskiego and Iwaszkiewicza streets, in the direction of Wrocławska. Meanwhile, the bus bay on Sikorskiego, opposite the church, will undergo a major upgrade. The stop on Sikorskiego Street before the intersection with Wrocławska will be removed.
