The most common mistake clients make is failing to collect invoices and receipts documenting the costs incurred for their children or themselves. Be careful with fiscal receipts. A receipt can easily be challenged in court by arguing that the person applying for child support has a friend at a store who gives them receipts belonging to other people so that they can show higher living costs. Another omission is failing to collect medical records and documentation of treatment costs for a sick child. These costs are always high, and documenting them makes it easier to apply for an increase in child support. Also remember that a court may award support to an adult from their spouse.

You should collect invoices, receipts, bills and bank transfers related to the following expenses:

  • living expenses, meaning how much you spend on food on average each week
  • clothing purchases
  • medication purchases
  • doctor visits (if you suffer from a chronic illness, preventive healthcare is also important)
  • electricity, gas, water, power, waste collection, heating fuel and similar charges
  • all subscription fees: telephone, digital television, internet and landline telephone
  • rent
  • commuting to work
  • loans, borrowings or other liabilities, if you have them; if you own a car, also compulsory and comprehensive insurance premiums
  • and any other costs you incur for yourself and your child
