The tragic incident occurred on 13 April this year at around 6:00 a.m. in one of the gaming salons in Zgorzelec. Piotr G. entered the premises, holding a plastic canister of petrol. Referring to circumstances that have not been precisely established, the man demanded that the gaming-salon employee return his money. The injured party began explaining to the perpetrator that he did not owe him anything.
G., dissatisfied with the turn of events, poured petrol over Tomasz K.’s clothing and then over the clothing of his colleague. He ignited a gas lighter, causing the resulting petrol vapours to explode and the victims’ clothing to catch fire. The perpetrator first jumped out of the burning premises through a window, followed by both victims.
Piotr G. fled the scene, while his victims were extinguished by passers-by. As a result of the incident, the injured men suffered very extensive burns to their bodies, posing a real threat to their lives. Both were taken to hospital.
The suspect also suffered injuries in the form of burns to his hands and legs. Therefore, after being arrested by police officers, he was also placed in hospital.
At the request of the district prosecutor, the District Court in Zgorzelec ordered Piotr G.’s pre-trial detention for three months.
G. had already been convicted by the courts numerous times; for this crime, he could face even life imprisonment.
