The matter was brought to our attention by one of the parishioners. The clock on the tower of the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius was installed on Friday, March 13. “It has beautifully adorned the tower of our church,” says Rev. Prelate Wojciech Mroszczak, the parish priest, in an interview with “ii”.
The clock, gilded with 24-karat gold, was made by an entrepreneur from Krotoszyn. The project was approved by the Legnica curia, while the device itself cost PLN 20,000 (it was purchased with parishioners’ donations).
The clock is satellite-controlled. Using hammers that strike the bells, it chimes both the quarter hours and the full hours. However, no one needs to worry that the device will disturb their sleep—the clock “plays” from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
“Ever since we built this church, it has been my wish for our tower to have a clock. But previously there were no funds for it,” explains the parish priest. “There were always more urgent investments. Now, however, it seems that we have already completed everything: the heating, the magnificent 18-stop pipe organ, the roof and the façades. So the time has come for a clock. It is a wonderful finishing touch to this church.”
As Rev. Prelate Wojciech Mroszczak emphasizes, clocks of this type are a tradition: “They have been installed on towers for centuries. In the past, people did not have watches and would leave their homes to see what time it was.”
Moreover, the clock mechanism is configured so that two more faces could be installed on the church tower (the one hanging since March 13 faces Łasicka Street). The cost of the additional faces would be lower—PLN 13,000 each. The parish priest does not intend to ask parishioners for this anymore. However, he adds that if a sponsor came forward, he would welcome them with open arms.
