The work will be carried out as part of the “Asbestos Removal Programme in the Legnica Municipality”. It will cover the properties of 19 individuals in the Piekary and Przybków areas who joined the programme. One property from which asbestos will be removed belongs to the municipality. The work will involve dismantling or collecting asbestos-containing products, transporting them and disposing of them.

According to the contract, the work will begin in March and continue until September 2015. A total of 26 tonnes of the hazardous substance will be removed. The cost is approximately PLN 22,000, of which PLN 15,000 is a grant from the Wrocław Voivodeship Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management, with the remaining amount coming from the city budget.

Let us recall that, with the participation of the WFOŚiGW in Wrocław, the city authorities had already carried out asbestos removal in 2011 and 2012. At that time, more than 13 tonnes were removed from municipal properties and properties belonging to the Municipal Housing Management Board.

The programme was developed in 2009 and adopted by the City Council in 2010. The inventory conducted at that time showed that 382.5 tonnes of asbestos were present in the city. In this respect, Legnica is in a much more favourable situation than other large cities. The inventory also showed that individuals own 90 percent of the buildings containing asbestos materials. They too are beneficiaries of municipal funding. The funding does not cover the reconstruction of roof coverings or façades, nor the securing of roof structures until a new covering is installed.
