The report of a suspected offense in this case was filed by representatives of two electoral committees. It was reported that more than 700 people may have been added to the Rudna municipality voter register at the addresses of supporters and candidates for councilor positions, as well as the candidate for municipal head from the “Nasza Gmina” Electoral Committee.

During the preliminary investigative activities, the prosecutor asked the Rudna Municipal Office to submit all administrative decisions issued in 2014 concerning people added to the voter register. It was established that this involved 188 people. The voter register of those eligible to vote as of January 1, 2014, contained 6,019 people.

Interviews are currently being conducted with people who applied to be entered in the voter register, as well as with those who registered the applicants at their addresses. It is also necessary to establish whether, before issuing the decisions, the municipal head verified that the people applying for entry in the voter register actually lived permanently within the municipality. This requirement is set out in the Electoral Code.

Importantly, under the Electoral Code, only residents who permanently live within a municipality but are not registered there may apply to be entered in that municipality’s voter register. The investigation will determine whether a voter list was prepared in the municipality that included people who were not eligible to vote. The investigation is ongoing.

This offense carries a penalty of up to three years in prison. We will return to the subject.
