Although mammography is the most effective method of breast cancer prevention, fewer than half of women have still undergone a free examination as part of the Population-Based Breast Cancer Early Detection Programme!
We encourage women aged 50–69 to undergo breast cancer screening, as breast cancer is the most common cancer among Polish women. We particularly appeal to all women born in 1965, as they enter the Programme this year (which means they are eligible for a free examination without a referral).
Mammography will be available in a mobile mammography unit:
- Nowogrodziec – 10 January in the car park next to the Municipal Office, ul. Rynek 1
- Gromadka – 11 January next to the School Complex, ul. Sikorskiego 19
- Warta Bolesławiecka – 11 January next to the Municipal Cultural Centre, Warta Bolesławiecka 29B.
Who is eligible for examinations under the Programme?
The Programme covers women aged 50–69, as this group is particularly at risk of developing breast cancer. No doctor’s referral is required for the examination. The examination is free of charge and is reimbursed for women every two years by the National Health Fund.
How do you register?
- by phone: 58 666 2 444 (Mon–Fri 8:00–20:00; Sat–Sun 9:00–18:00)
- online: www.mammo.pl.
Some women are unaware of the importance of regular check-ups and prevention, which enable the early detection of cancerous changes and make it possible to cure them in almost 100% of cases. We encourage you to actively help promote the aforementioned Programme among the people around you!
A mammogram takes only a few minutes and involves taking four X-ray images—two views of each breast. There is no need to fear the examination, as the radiation emitted is no greater than that used for a dental X-ray. It enables the recognition and detection of so-called asymptomatic changes (lumps and other abnormalities in the breast) at a very early stage of development—when they cannot yet be felt by the woman or a doctor—which significantly increases the chance of recovery.
Did you not receive a personal invitation for the examination? It does not matter—if you are aged between 50 and 69 (born between 1946 and 1965) and have not had a mammogram within the past two years, you are entitled to a free examination. We encourage you to register!
To avoid having to wait in line at the mobile mammography unit, we recommend registering in advance by calling 58 666 2 444. The call centre is open seven days a week. Information about the examinations is also available at www.mammo.pl.
IMPORTANT: The Population-Based Breast Cancer Early Detection Programme is intended for healthy women who have not previously had breast cancer. By reaching as many women as possible in the 50–69 age group—the group most at risk of developing breast cancer—it aims to increase the proportion of breast cancers detected at the earliest stage of clinical advancement. The result of the screening examination consists of breast X-rays assessed by two specialist doctors, accompanied by a brief note stating whether changes were detected. It is not a full diagnostic report, as in a traditional examination. If further diagnosis is necessary, the letter contains guidelines on the appropriate course of action.
