The presentation of the new purchase took place at MPK. Those attending included the mayor Tadeusz Krzakowski, MPK executives, media representatives and, as the first passengers, children from the non-public “Dziecięcy Ogród” kindergarten and students of Zespół Szkół Samochodowych.

This latest-generation low-floor bus makes a tremendous impression with its equipment, performance and size. It is 15 metres long. It is the first new bus of this size purchased by MPK since 1998. The driver can lower the chassis at stops, making it easier to board and leave. It also has a ramp for wheelchair access. Passengers have 36 seats and 99 standing places at their disposal. Wheelchairs and strollers with small children fit easily inside. The bus meets the highest environmental standards. “This is no joke, but in some cities, for example in Upper Silesia, the exhaust fumes coming out of these buses are cleaner than the air they take in,” said MPK president Zdzisław Bakinowski.

The Solaris Urbino 15 is made of the highest-quality, stainless materials. Naturally, it has an ABS system and the ARS anti-skid system. The doors are equipped with a mechanism protecting passengers from being trapped. The bus has a monitoring system: four cameras inside and one outside. It also has systems enabling economical driving, counting passengers and extinguishing engine fires, as well as an LCD monitor. And, very importantly, full air conditioning.

The bus will serve the city’s busiest routes – 15 and 16. The most experienced drivers will take the wheel.

“This bus is top of the line,” says Krzysztof Olszewski from the second-year class at Zespół Szkół Samochodowych. “Perhaps one day I will service or drive buses like this. For now, I will use it to get to school.”

MPK currently has 65 buses. This latest purchase is the implementation of mayor Tadeusz Krzakowski’s consistent policy aimed at modernising the city carrier’s fleet and purchasing modern, passenger- and environmentally friendly, safe buses.

Let us recall that this year the city has already purchased, thanks to EU funding obtained, six equally modern Solaris buses. They joined MPK’s fleet and are serving the city’s residents well.
