A case was uncovered by officers from the Zgorzelec Mobile Group. One TIR driver, who was also the owner of a transport company, wanted to pretend that he had taken a 45-minute rest break. To do so, he switched off the tachograph by attaching a magnet taken from a loudspeaker to the gearbox pulse generator.
The penalty for failing to take a rest break is several hundred PLN, while switching off the tachograph carries a fine of several thousand PLN. As Customs Service officers emphasize, driving during a period designated for rest has a negative impact on the safety of both the driver and other road users.
