With the participation of the WFOŚiGW in Wrocław, Legnica had already carried out asbestos removal in 2011 and 2012. At that time, more than 13 tonnes were removed from properties belonging to the municipality and the Zarząd Gospodarki Mieszkaniowej.
The programme was developed in 2009 and adopted by the City Council in 2010. The inventory conducted at that time revealed the presence of 382.5 tonnes of asbestos in the city. “In this respect, we are in a very good situation compared with other large cities,” municipal officials emphasise.
The inventory also showed that private individuals own 90 percent of the properties where asbestos-containing materials are present. They too will be eligible for municipal funding.
The funding will cover the costs of dismantling, transporting and disposing of asbestos. Up to PLN 680 per tonne can be obtained from the Fund for carrying out this work, while the remaining amount will come from the budget of the city of Legnica. The municipality will select the contractor through a call for tenders. The subsidies may not be used for new roofing or new façades.
Various entities will be eligible for funding, particularly private individuals and housing associations. It will be necessary to submit an application to qualify for participation in the programme.
Private individuals interested in removing asbestos from their properties are asked to contact the Environmental Protection and Agriculture Department of the Municipal Office, room 301, third floor, tel. 76 72 12 240 or 76 72 12 243.
