The State Archive in Lubań opened in 1961. Since 1995, its archival holdings have increased significantly. The lack of space for taking in more records prompted the institution’s authorities to search for a suitable building. In 2012, the Director General of the State Archives decided to take over the Electronic Technical School workshops building (Bankowa Street) for the future archive in Bolesławiec. Renovation began in October last year.
“We received this property free of charge from Bolesławiec County,” said Dr Janusz Gołaszewski, director of the State Archive in Wrocław, who visited Bolesławiec together with Adam Baniecki, head of the Lubań branch of the Wrocław State Archive. “All the work is progressing according to schedule. We have assumed that it will be completed by October 31 this year, and that the Bolesławiec archive will open in May 2015.
“This is our joint success,” emphasized county head Dariusz Kwaśniewski. “We have been striving for this for a very long time. What matters is the benefit this will bring to Bolesławiec, the county and the subregion. It is an element that contributes to city development; not every city or every county has its own archive.
“The path to establishing an archive in Bolesławiec was not easy at all. We had to overcome many administrative obstacles,” said Adam Baniecki. “At a certain point, the Lubań archive became too cramped. Fortunately, we found a suitable property in Bolesławiec.
The institution’s activities will cover three counties: Bolesławiec, Zgorzelec and Lubań. We will return to this topic.
